After Life Review: Depressing or Moving?

Spoiler Alert: Although this post won’t tell you exactly what happens, this review will tell you about the overall message of the show and how the ending is actually very positive. If you don’t want to know anything about the ending of the show before watching it yourself, I would wait till after to read this post.

A lot of people might have been put off by the depressing description of Netflix’s After Life but let me tell you, it is certainly not all doom and gloom, it actually presents a very positive and beautiful message. The aim of this post is to persuade those who think that the show is too depressing to watch, to take a chance on the show because of its moving message that is revealed towards the end of the series.

The main character of the show is played by the legendary and hilarious Ricky Gervais. Tony is clearly suffering from depression after losing his wife to cancer.

Reasons to watch After Life:

Seeing The Love That Tony Has For His Wife Will Warm Your Heart

Tony is feeling lost and doesn’t quite know how to be happy without his wife because he mentions how all he ever looked forward to when his wife Lisa was alive, was going home and being with her, How Sweet! Yes, the show mainly talks about her death, but it is also filled with cute flashbacks of how well they got on. After Life reminds people that true love is real.

It’s Hilarious

Another break that viewers get from the overall depressing subject is the humour in the show. You probably guessed that humour was involved because it was created by the comedy legend Ricky Gervais who also plays the main character. If you weren’t aware, Ricky Gervais is the genius behind The Office. Though, the humour is much more British, so if you’re easily offended, this might be a no for you. Your loss.

The Moral Of The Story

In the end, Tony realises that although his behaviour is completely understandable, he is actually being quite selfish. The overall message of the show is that “it’s not all about us” and that what is most important is what we do for others. This all wraps things together as Tony previously mentioned that the only thing that stopped him from committing suicide was the fact that no one else would be there to look after his dog.

Although this post has contained some spoilers, I truly believe that this show is still worth a watch because I think that the main point of this show is not necessarily what happens, but how the message at the end of it makes you feel. So if you feel like you’re in need of watching something inspiring and you’ve already binged all three series of Queereye, this needs to be next on your ‘to watch’ list.

Happy Netflix binging!
